Home Air Purifier Buying Guide: Room Size, CADR, Filters and Ozone

A useful air cleaner is not the one with the longest feature list. Define the pollutant, fix controllable sources, measure the real room, require performance evidence, and confirm that the machine can run where people actually live.

Published October 16, 2026. General home and consumer education, not medical advice or a substitute for professional building, HVAC, environmental or clinical assessment. Air cleaners do not correct every indoor-air problem and are not a treatment for disease. Leave a building and seek emergency or qualified help for combustion hazards, carbon-monoxide alarms, severe symptoms, fire or other urgent conditions.

The useful answer

  • Start with source control and appropriate ventilation; portable filtration is a supplement, not a repair for an active leak, combustion problem, radon, mold source or unsafe product.
  • Measure the connected space and compare a published CADR for the pollutant of concern at the speed you can tolerate, rather than relying on an undefined maximum-room claim.
  • Treat particle filtration, gas and odor reduction, and germ-related claims as different jobs, and require evidence for the exact model and configuration.
  • Reject purposeful ozone generation, budget for exact replacement filters and electricity, place the unit for free airflow, and keep a dated operating and maintenance record.

Name the pollutant and solve the source first

Write the problem in plain terms before shopping: wildfire smoke particles, recurring cooking particles, pollen entering a bedroom, dust disturbed by activity, or a particular gas or odor source. Different technologies address different contaminants, and a machine that moves particles well may do little for gases. If the concern is an unexplained smell, visible moisture, combustion, a fuel-burning appliance, renovation dust, pests or a health symptom, investigate the source instead of assigning the purifier a job it cannot safely finish.

EPA describes source control, ventilation and supplemental filtration as the core indoor-air strategies, and says source control is usually the most effective approach for many household problems. Repair leaks, vent combustion and cooking correctly, keep smoke outdoors and follow current public-health or building guidance. A portable cleaner can lower some airborne pollutants in the room where it operates, but it cannot remove contamination embedded in materials, supply outdoor air, fix radon or guarantee that no one will become ill.

  • Observed pollutant or event, room and timing: ________
  • Source-control action completed or responsible professional: ________
  • Ventilation opportunity and outdoor-air constraint: ________
  • What filtration is expected to change—and what it cannot change: ________

Measure the actual room and translate size into airflow

Measure floor length and width, then note ceiling height, open doors, archways and connected spaces. A living room that flows into a kitchen is not the same assignment as a closed bedroom with the same floor area. Manufacturer coverage claims may assume different air-change targets, fan speeds or ceiling heights. Record the assumption behind any advertised square-foot number so two machines can be compared on the same basis rather than by the largest number printed on a box.

Clean Air Delivery Rate, or CADR, combines airflow with particle-removal performance and is commonly reported separately for smoke, dust and pollen. EPA advises choosing a CADR large enough for the room; for wildfire cleaner-air rooms, EPA gives a practical smoke-CADR target of at least two-thirds of the room area in square feet. Higher ceilings, open plans, heavy particle loads and a quieter everyday fan setting can justify more capacity. Do not silently compare one model's maximum-speed CADR with another model's quiet setting.

  • Room length × width, ceiling height and connected openings: ________
  • Pollutant and applicable smoke / dust / pollen CADR: ________
  • Published test or certification source for exact model: ________
  • Usable fan speed and expected operating hours: ________

Separate particles, gases and marketing language

A high-efficiency particle filter is relevant to airborne particles; it is not automatically a gas or odor solution. For gases, sorbent media such as activated carbon may be used, but effectiveness depends on the compound, media type and quantity, airflow and replacement condition. Ask for an exact claim and supporting test for the exact model. A thin carbon sheet described as odor control should not be treated as broad removal of volatile organic compounds, smoke gases or hazardous combustion products.

Read germ, allergen and medical-sounding language narrowly. An air cleaner may reduce some airborne particles under stated test conditions without preventing infection, curing asthma or making an unsafe room safe. EPA does not certify or recommend brands of home air cleaners. Look for independently reported performance metrics and a clear operating configuration, then treat health claims as a separate evidence question. Anyone using filtration as part of a medical management plan should ask an appropriate clinician about the individual plan.

  • Particle claim and verified metric: ________
  • Gas or odor claim, sorbent type and evidence: ________
  • Exact filter and configuration used in the claim: ________
  • Disease, prevention or safety language removed from the buying decision unless independently supported: yes / no

Make ozone and electrical safety non-negotiable

Do not buy a device intended to generate ozone in occupied space. EPA calls ozone a lung irritant and warns that ionizers and some other electronic air cleaners can produce it indirectly, while ozone generators introduce it deliberately. If considering an electronic technology, verify the exact model against a current low- or zero-ozone listing and understand which function is enabled. A vague label such as ion, plasma, active oxygen or fresh-air technology is not enough to resolve the question.

Inspect the listing label, cord, plug, placement clearances and recall status for the exact model. Use the electrical connection and cleaning method specified by the manufacturer; do not route a cord under a rug or block an intake or outlet. A filter loaded beyond its service condition can reduce airflow. Turn off and unplug as directed before service, and stop using a unit that overheats, smells electrically abnormal, shows damaged wiring or is subject to a recall.

  • Ozone-producing feature absent or exact certification/listing verified: ________
  • Safety listing, model number and recall check date: ________
  • Required clearances and direct power arrangement: ________
  • Stop-use and service route saved: ________

Price the machine you will actually operate

Compare total first-year and multi-year cost: unit, exact prefilter and main-filter replacements, any gas media, electricity, shipping and disposal. Record the manufacturer's replacement interval as a planning assumption rather than a promise; real loading varies with smoke events, pets, dust and operating time. Confirm that replacement elements are identifiable and obtainable through a documented channel. A cheap chassis with scarce proprietary filters can become the more expensive or unusable choice.

Noise is a performance constraint because a powerful machine left off at night has no nighttime CADR. Compare sound information at the speed you expect to use, look for easy controls and verify whether bright displays can be dimmed without disabling filtration. ENERGY STAR certification addresses energy performance under its current criteria, not removal of every pollutant or medical benefit. Use the product finder to compare exact certified models and operating data rather than treating the logo as a universal quality award.

  • Unit price, annual filter plan and annual energy estimate: ________
  • Exact replacement part numbers and current source: ________
  • Noise and light acceptable at usable fan speed: yes / no
  • Three-year ownership estimate and replacement trigger: ________

Place, run and review the system

Place the cleaner in the room where protection is needed, with intake and discharge clear and doors managed consistently with the sizing assumption. Do not hide it behind furniture or place it where curtains, bedding or walls choke airflow. During wildfire smoke, follow current local and EPA advice about windows, HVAC settings and creating a cleaner-air room; conditions can change quickly, and filtration does not make extreme smoke exposure harmless.

Record the model, serial number, room, settings, start date and filter changes. Review whether the original problem is meaningfully better, whether the machine runs enough, and whether a source or ventilation issue still needs action. A consumer particle sensor can show trends but does not identify every pollutant or prove clinical safety. Reassess after room changes, smoke seasons, renovation or new symptoms, and involve qualified HVAC, environmental, building or health professionals when the question exceeds a portable appliance.

  • Placement and airflow clearances photographed: yes / no
  • Normal speed, schedule and door/window assumption: ________
  • Filter inspection and replacement record: ________
  • Review date, observed result and unresolved source issue: ________

Frequently asked questions

Does a HEPA label tell me what room size an air purifier can handle?

No. A filter description does not establish the complete unit's delivered airflow. Use the exact model's independently reported CADR, the real connected room and the fan speed you can operate.

Can an air purifier remove odors and gases?

Some units use sorbent media for specified gases or odors, but particle filters do not automatically do that job. Require an exact claim, meaningful media information and evidence for the exact model.

Should I buy an ozone generator for a musty room?

No for occupied-space air cleaning. EPA identifies ozone as a lung irritant and says ozone generators are not always safe and effective at controlling indoor air pollution. Find and correct the moisture or contamination source.

Can an air purifier solve radon or mold?

It does not replace radon mitigation or moisture and mold-source correction. EPA specifically does not recommend air cleaners to reduce radon and its decay products. Use the appropriate test, repair and qualified help.
